How to find a Teaching School placement
Teaching and Learning students regardless of their course are called preservice teachers and are required to complete their Teaching School Experience units in a school placement. You will remain at the same school for your Teaching School Experience units for the whole year.
When selecting a school for your placement it is important to consider a number of issues:
- No family member should be on the staff of the school.
- No family member should be attending the school, sometimes this may be waived depending on permission from the school Principal, but NO family member should be in the class you are attending for your practicum.
- A variety of schools – The course qualifies you to teach across year levels as well as across school types so it is important to have a wide range of school experiences. No more than two placements will be allowed in the same school.
- All Teaching School Experiences should be done in sequence.
- A Teaching and Learning student cannot receive remuneration in any form for the duties carried out during their Teaching School Experience unit placement.
Specific notes for GDTL students.
- GDTL students will complete all teaching school experiences in the one school to immerse themselves in the school culture. They will however be required to prepare a learning plan that indicates a variety of experience at that school, eg Primary – an early childhood experience for one teaching school experience followed by a middle to upper teaching school experience or vice versa. For secondary – different age groups and/or teaching areas.
- Any GDTL student who is employed in a school will be required to complete one of the two teaching school experiences in another school to ensure a wide range of experiences. Your Teaching School Coordinator can be contacted to discuss this.
The university is governed by various statutory regulations as well as a number of quality assurance policies. Therefore please note the following:
- Flexibility and consideration of special circumstances will be made in approving a Teaching School placement, however the above dot-points are important to consider and are essential in making the Teaching School Experience the best possible.
- Please maintain regular contact with the Professional Learning Leader,
particularly in the instance of issues regarding ‘’at risk’’ processes or
workplace grievances. Further information:

ALL PRESERVICE TEACHERS WILL REQUIRE A CRIMINAL HISTORY CHECKBEFORE ATTENDING ANY TEACHING SCHOOL.
Stay tuned for more information during O Week. External students should check the regulations that apply in your state or jurisdiction with the principal of your chosen school.
Important information for Preservice Teachers who live in the
Darwin/Palmerston/Alice Springs area regardless of whether you are an INTERNAL or EXTERNAL student
You will be given the opportunity to nominate 3 preferred Teaching Schools for your Teaching School Experience placement. While there is no guarantee you will receive your first preference as your Teaching School Placement, we will endeavor to place you according to your preferences and as per availability in the nominated school.
Important information for Preservice Teachers who are in EXTERNAL mode and live outside the NT.
You need to organise your own Teaching School Experience (placement) by contacting the Principal of a local school, to determine their willingness to host you as a Preservice Teacher. When you have this consent you need to negotiate placement in a classroom with a Mentor Teacher. You then need to use the appropriate external Teaching School Placement form found in the unit information section in the relevant Teaching School Experience unit information in learnline and email this to eschool@cdu.edu.au.
The Teaching School Coordinator will organise contact with the school once you have registered your school as per the process above by using the external Teaching School Placement form. Please ensure your mentor teacher (the teacher in whose class you are to work) has access to the E Teaching School site http://eschool.cdu.edu.au.
